Pali Highway closed to clear off fallen tree

Police temporarily closed the Kailua-bound lanes on the Pali Highway yesterday morning after a large tree fell on the road.

The tree fell across the highway at 10:49 a.m., police said.

Police closed the lanes and redirected traffic to the townbound lanes of the highway. City crew members cut up the tree and removed it. All lanes were reopened at 12:30 p.m.

Real property taxes are due Aug. 23

The first installment of real property taxes for the City & County of Honolulu is due Aug. 23, the city said.

Property owners who pay their taxes directly and have not received their tax bills should contact the city, officials said. The city announced last week that real property tax bills had been mailed out. Not receiving a bill does not waive a penalty charge for late payments.

Those who have not received a bill should contact the city Real Property Collection Section at 523-4856. Residents can also go to the office at city hall, which is open Monday through Friday.

Meeting to address pollution in Waialua

The state Department of Health and the University of Hawaii's Environmental Center are seeking community input in identifying and addressing pollution problems at Kaiaka-Waialua Bay on the North Shore.

A public informational meeting will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at the Haleiwa Elementary School, 66-505 Haleiwa Road. For information, call 956-7361.

Man arrested following alleged sexual assault

Police arrested a 33-year-old Waikiki man Monday night who allegedly sexually assaulted and kidnapped a 44-year-old Japanese national staying at a Waikiki condominium.

The victim told police she was sitting in the Jacuzzi of the Discovery Bay condominium building when the suspect approached her and began a conversation.

Police said the man then grabbed the woman and tried to pull her onto his lap. The victim, however, got up and walked to the women's restroom about 9:53 p.m., police said. The suspect followed her inside, and sexually assaulted her, police said.

Police found the man later at the building and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping.

Victim in bus accident suffered heart attack

The Medical Examiner's Office found that a 53-year-old man who died Saturday after he crashed a bus into a car and a utility pole in McCully had suffered a heart attack.

He was identified as David Lono Jr. of Makiki.

Police said the passenger bus rear-ended a car stopped at a stoplight on McCully Street near Algaroba Street and pushed it into the intersection. The bus continued forward, striking a utility pole and tile wall. Two people in the car were not injured.

2 teenage boys sought in robbery in Makiki

Police are looking for two teenage boys who allegedly robbed a 31-year-old Makiki man riding his bike at a Makiki park Monday night.

The man was riding a bike at the Makiki District Park at 9:15 p.m. when two boys, about 17 years old, ran up to him, jumped on him and hit him on the head with a rock, police said.

The suspects allegedly stole his wallet, which contained a small amount of cash.

Man allegedly punches pastor during service

Police arrested a 40-year-old man yesterday for allegedly punching a church pastor in the face at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

The man allegedly got upset during a service at the church in Makiki and punched the pastor, 33, causing a laceration above his eye, police said.

The man allegedly punched a bystander, broke a stained glass window and then jumped off the second-floor balcony, causing injuries to himself, police said.

The man was taken to the Queen's Medical Center, where he was hospitalized. Police were informed of his release yesterday and arrested him for second-degree assault.

Fall in swimming pool results in injury

A 55-year-old Waialae man was in stable condition after he either dove or fell into a swimming pool with no water in it at his home on Hakaka Street last night.

The man was drinking alcohol earlier in the evening, Emergency Medical Services officials said.

The ambulance service received the call at 7:48 p.m., and the man was taken to Kaiser Medical Center.

Woman allegedly stabs husband in forearm

Police arrested a 20-year-old Mililani woman who allegedly stabbed her husband Monday night.

Police said the couple was arguing at about 10 p.m., when the woman stabbed her husband, 22, in the right forearm.

Police arrested the woman for suspicion of second-degree assault. The man refused treatment for minor injuries, police said.

Traffic stop leads to auto theft arrest

Police arrested a 27-year-old Sunset Beach woman early yesterday morning in front of the Kahuku Police Station for investigation of auto theft.

An officer spotted a pickup truck weaving along the stretch of Kamehameha Highway near Malaekahana and suspected her of drunken driving. A check of the license plate revealed the truck had been stolen last September from Cummins Street in Kakaako.

The officer stopped the woman in front of the police station about 3:40 a.m. and arrested her.
