Daiei falls on report of bailout

Shares of Daiei Inc. fell as much as a fifth after a report Japan's corporate bailout agency may rescue the retailer. Daiei denied it intends to seek government help.

The Industrial Revitalization Corp. drew up the rescue plan after being approached by people involved in the Japanese retailer's reorganization, the Sankei newspaper said on its Web site, without saying who provided the information. The program would also involve lenders being asked to waive about $3.6 billion of Daiei's loans, the paper said.

"We're not in talks with the Revitalization Agency," said Mitsuru Sano, a Daiei spokesman. "We are still deciding on details of the new business plan starting March 2005."
