Burrow tops Patacchia

Hawaii surfer Fred Patacchia made the final heat of the U.S. Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, Calif., yesterday, winning $4,000 and taking fourth place.

Patacchia scored 10.46 points but couldn't compete with Australia's Taj Burrow, who took first with 13.50 points and won $15,000. Trent Munro finished second and Cory Lopez took third.

Kalani Robb was the only other Hawaii surfer to make it out of the round of 32, but lost in the quarterfinals.

Chelsea Georgeson made it an Australian sweep by winning the women's event to earn $6,000. Fellow Australian Pauline Menczer took second while Jacqueline Silva of Brazil finished third.

Melanie Bartels advanced the farthest among Hawaii women, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Silvia and Georgeson. Hawaii surfers Keala Kennelly, Rachel Ballard and Megan Abubo all made it to the round of 32 but were stopped there.

Although Hawaii struggled in the professional events, it had little trouble in the amateur one.

Dustin Cuizon and Kekoa Bacalso of Hawaii both made the final heat at the Lost Pro Junior competition before the U.S. Open.

Cuizon scored 430 points to fall 70 short of champion Adriano De Souza of Brazil, but still earned $1,000 for finishing as the runner-up. Bacalso outscored Joan De Silva of Brazil by 30 points to take third place and pocket $800. Hawaii's Nathan Carroll made the semifinals but was ousted by Cuizon and Da Silva.

Kolea Fukumitsu could have made the final heat an entirely Hawaii affair, but allowed Johnson to nip him in the semifinals.

Pete Johnson of Hawaii made the final heat of the longboard division, but finished third. Kiva Rivers of Hawaii bowed out in the semifinals.
