Stanley leads U.S. men to win

Clay Stanley of Honolulu scored a match-high 19 points to lead the United States men's volleyball team to a sweep of defending Olympic gold medalist Serbia and Montenegro yesterday at a Pre-Olympic Tournament in Vrsac, Serbia and Montenegro.

Stanley, a Kaiser High and University of Hawaii product, had 17 kills, one block and an ace in Team USA's 25-15, 25-18, 25-20 victory.

The U.S. men are 1-1 and play Greece today in Belgrade in the final day of the tournament.

Women's team loses: Former UH player Heather Bown had 10 kills in the U.S. women's team's 3-1 loss to Italy in the FIVB World Grand Prix in Reggio Calabria, Italy.

Punahou graduate Lindsey Berg had two kills as the U.S. lost 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19.

Hawaii Select reaches semifinals in Las Vegas

The Hawaii Select girls basketball team defeated the Tucson Miracles 39-31 yesterday to advance to today's semifinals of the American Roundball Corporation Slam-N-Jam Las Vegas National Championships.

Hawaii Select plays the Seattle Magic today in a semifinal game in the Girls All-Star Division. The championship will be played later in the day.

Hawaii Select went 2-0 in pool play. McKinley's Chelsea Sato had 11 points in Hawaii Select's 50-38 win over the Lady Katz (Ariz.) on Wednesday. Iolani's Keilyn Fujioka had 16 points in a 50-48 win over Seattle on Thursday.

Pearl City wins Senior League opener

Shannon Liu went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs and Jason Rasa had four RBIs to lead Pearl City to a 17-2 in over Turner (Ore.) yesterday in the Senior Division I Baseball Tournament (ages 15-16) in Missoula, Mont.

Pearl City next faces Vancouver (Wash.) today. The Division I winner advances to the West Regional next week in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.

Kaneko tied for second in Florida

Ayaka Kaneko of Honolulu shot a 77 yesterday and is tied for second place in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Kaneko has a two-round total of 150. Xyra Suyetsugu, also of Honolulu, recovered from an opening-round 81 to shoot a 76 yesterday and is tied for 10th place at 157.

The cut will be made after today's round with the top 35 players, plus ties, competing in the final round tomorrow.
