Real Hawaii wins national title
The Real Hawaii Futbol Club Under-12 girls finished undefeated and claimed first place yesterday in the Premier Division at the United States Club Soccer National Cup at Cary, N.C.
Real tied Gwinette Soccer Academy of Georgia 1-1 yesterday in the final day of action. That gave the Hawaii team five points and a one-point advantage over the Washington (D.C.) Freedom, who were tied 3-3 by the Chicago Magic after leading 3-0 at the half.
Mari Miyashiro scored Real's goal 20 minutes into the match. She had all three Real (1-0-2) goals in the tournament.
"I wish we could have put away more goals, but it was a great experience to play teams we never played before," Real coach Lisa Nakagawa said.
"The teams we played were very technical, very skilled. We had to put everything out and the girls came through. We prepared well before we came here and hydrated well here. It has been very hot. The girls were disciplined, but they had a lot of fun."
Mililani boys second: The Mililani Soccer Club Strikers, scoreless in their first two matches, erupted for three goals yesterday and took second place in the U-13 boys first division with a 3-0 victory over Peach Tree (Ga.).
Rory Yamamoto scored the Strikers' first goal for a 1-0 halftime lead. Micah Uehara followed with a pair of goals after intermission.
"Our team played much better today. It was a good experience," coach Jeff Yamamoto said. "I only wish we could have played the first-place team on the last day and not the first because we got better each day.
"The organization of the tournament was top notch and the facilities were great."
This was the first time Hawaii has been represented at the National Cup.
