Mormon settlements in isles is lecture topic

A Brigham Young University history professor will lecture on the first Mormon settlements in Hawaii next week at Bishop Museum.

Fred Woods will speak at noon Monday in Paki Conference Room 2 on the first Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints missionaries who arrived on Lanai in 1850. His lecture at noon Tuesday will be about the establishment of the Mormon settlement at Laie in 1864.

Woods, who teaches church history at BYU in Provo, Utah, is teaching an Old Testament class at BYU-Hawaii this summer. He compiled first-person immigrant accounts from voyages between 1840-90, which the church published on CD as the "Mormon Immigration Index" in 2000. He is executive director of the nonprofit Mormon Historic Sites Foundation.
