The referral program is offered for university students who need housing and for people who can supply rooms for students. To post their information, people can call, e-mail, apply in person or visit the office's Web site.
People leave their name, age, sex, date needed, asking price, preferences and contact information, which are posted on the Web site. Postings are deleted after 30 days. People may call to cancel or extend their posting.
People then can contact each other using the information supplied and work out an agreement among themselves. The office does not contact the other party for interested applicants.
Earlier this week, UH officials said about 1,400 people are on the waiting list for on-campus dorms and apartments because of increased enrollment and the limited number of rooms available.
The office received 110 housing requests yesterday and 313 during the week, compared with 147 last week, according to Terry Howell, who works in the office.
The majority of the requests this week have been from Oahu students, Howell said, who are behind mainland, international and neighbor island students on the priority list.
"This is the worst I've seen it all summer," Howell said.
