HPU gets new cheerleading coach

Matt Parkey has been named head coach of the Hawaii Pacific University team.

HIs experience includes coaching and teaching gymnastics at Cheer Athletics in Dallas and working for the National Cheerleaders Association.

He is a graduate of the University of Louisville, where he was captain of the cheerleading team for two years.

Final speed camps for summer coming up

There are three more chances to participate in the Hawaii Speed and Quickness Camps this summer.

The camps, facilitated by University of Hawaii football coaches Rich Miano and Mel deLaura, are this Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25 and July 31 and Aug. 1. Morning sessions for younger children are 10:30 to noon and older athletes go in the afternoon, 2 to 4.

The camp costs $10 and participants receive certificates from Jamba Juice and Subway.

Record field expected for paddleboard race

Organizers anticipate a record number of entries for the 6.5-mile, $11,000 Hennessey's International Paddleboard Championships on July 24 at the North Shore.

Defending champion Jamie Mitchell from Australia will be one of close to 200 participants in the warm-up for the 32-mile Molokai to Oahu race Aug. 1.

Mick DeBetta, Cory Hutchings and Chris Owens are also among the top contenders.
