Lit returns for
‘Summer Heat Rave’
DON'T FEEL like spending your hard-earned cash to see Michelle Branch later this month at the Waikiki Shell?
Those of you looking to rock a little harder at a concert will be happy to hear that Lit is coming back to Honolulu on July 31. They'll be here to headline the "Summer Heat Rave" at Volcanoes Nightclub, with local acts Last in Line and Living in Question also lined up to play.
I actually got a chance to meet the members of Lit -- brothers A. Jay and Jeremy Popoff, Kevin Baldes and Allen Shellenberger -- when they were in town for "Poi Fest" back in May of 2000. I was working with one of the local rock stations in town at the time, and got assigned to pick up the band from the airport and shuttle them to Turtle Bay.
My highlight of the ride? Stopping along Kamehameha Highway near Haleiwa to play tourist and let the guys buy fresh fruit and coconut milk from one of the vendors on the side of the road. Good times ...
I ALSO had a good time Sunday at the Mai Tai Bar, when I served as a judge for the finals of the "Kaukau Challenge," a culinary competition that's been under way there since early last month.
Mai Tai's director of operations, Robert Caldwell, was on hand to make sure things ran smoothly, while I kicked it at a table with the Ronald McDonald House's Jay Cambra and fellow journalist James Gosner to judge the nine dishes that made it to the finals.
After more than two hours of eating, we picked Lance Nitahara's Fresh Ahi Carpaccio Salad as the best in the soup and salad category, Chris Dorsaneo's Southwest Grilled Pizza as the best among pupus and entrees, and Chauncey Asato-Ganiron's Banana Bread Pudding as the best dessert (it also won the overall award, scoring Asato-Ganiron a trip to California's Napa Valley). Winning dishes will be added to the Mai Tai Bar's menu.
And while all the winners deserved the recognition, I was also proud of Big Isle boy Kainoa Gillete -- the only finalist not enrolled in a culinary arts program, yet his pupu steak earned him second place in the pupus and entrees category ...
HONOR ROLL: Congrats to Nocturnal Sound Krew's DJ Jami, who took top honors at this month's DMC regionals at Studio 1 on July 3. The turntablist will travel to Los Angeles next month to take part in the national finals ... Props also to Jonah Moananu, a k a MC Mox, for winning the MC battle Thursday night at "Connect Four." Moananu beat out Ion Myke and will represent Oahu next month on Maui ... And don't sleep on Island Fire Productions' Wednesday night party, the "Zebra Lounge," at Venus Nightclub. A lot of the hotties who don't want to deal with crowds at Dave and Buster's end up here, and you know DJs Goodvybe and CC3 come correct on the decks at this one ...
