Big Island team wins volleyball championship

Pilipa'a, a team of players from the Big Island, beat South Florida 25-23, 12-25, 16-14 on Wednesday in Austin, Texas, in the final of the USA Junior Olympics boys 17-and under division.

Pilipa'a is comprised of players from Waiakea, Hilo and Pahoa high schools.

Olson leads Oahu Country Club Invitational

Peter Olson shot a 4-over-par 75 yesterday, but still held a one-stroke lead with par 142 after the second round of the Oahu Country Club Invitational.

Gary Kong and Tom Goodbody went into today's final round right behind Olson.

Metzger and Holdren win in Olympic tuneup

Beach volleyball Olympians Stein Metzger and partner Dax Holdren staved off elmination from the Mallorca Open yesterday by beating Kristjan Kais and Rivo Vesik of Estonia 21-18, 15-21 and 15-12.

Metzger, a Punahou graduate, and Holdren qualified for the U.S. Olympic team last week.

They were scheduled to play Fred Souza and Harley Marques of Brazil today as the tournament continued.

Ching will start in MLS All-Star Game

San Jose Earthquakes forward Brian Ching, a Kamehameha graduate born in Haleiwa, was selected yesterday to start in the MLS All-Star Game on July 31 at RFK Stadium in Washington.

The league announced the 22 starters, with defending MLS Cup champion San Jose and the runner-up Chicago Fire each sending five players. The MetroStars and Los Angeles Galaxy each have three starters.

This will be Ching's first All-Star game. Starters were determined through voting by fans, media, players, coaches and general managers.
