Carlyle Group completes sale of Horizon Lines

New York private-equity firm Castle Harlan Inc. said yesterday it has completed its purchase of Horizon Lines, the second largest mainland-Hawaii shipper, from the Carlyle Group for $650 million.

The Carlyle Group, which is buying telephone company Verizon Hawaii for $1.65 billion, sold the shipper for more than double the $300 million it paid to acquire Horizon Lines in February 2003.

Horizon Lines began West Coast-Hawaii ocean freight service in 1987, when it was known as Sea-Land Service, competing against long-time dominant Hawaii shipper Matson Navigation Co.

Castle Harlan said Horizon Line's senior management would stay in place and would continue to own an interest in the company.

Hawaiian Airlines on time 95.2%

Hawaiian Airlines posted a 95 percent on-time arrival rate for the second month in a row in May, making it the nation's most punctual carrier for the seventh month in a row.

The airline also ranked second for handling passenger baggage and fewest flight cancellations. Hawaiian had 2.83 reports of mishandled baggage per 1,000 customers to finish second behind JetBlue Airways at 2.18 reports.

Hawaiian had eight flight cancellations out of 3,976 total flights to put it second behind JetBlue, which had two cancellations.

Hawaiian's 95.2 percent on-time performance, which is gauged by flights that arrive within 15 minutes of scheduled time, beat out SkyWest Airlines' 86.8 percent and JetBlue's 83.4 percent.

Separately, Hawaiian said it has added Continental Airlines as an interline electronic ticketing partner to speed travel connections between the two carriers. Customers can purchase a single e-ticket and check in once for travel itineraries involving the airlines.
