Mari Cha IV smashes
Pacific Cup record

Mari Cha IV, a boat built to go after monohull records, claimed another one last night when it won the 2004 West Marine Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Kaneohe Bay.

Mari Cha IV came in at five days, five hours, 38 minutes and 10 seconds, easily eclipsing the previous record, set in 1998 by Pyewacket, of six days, 20 hours and 22 minutes.

The new champion vessel is 140 feet long, and owner-skipper Robert Miller has already used it to set the fastest time for a monohull across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to London. The Mari Cha IV will sail to Aloha Tower today, but will soon move on to Australia, where it will sail after the record in the Sydney-to-Hobart race.

Magnitude80 is also expected to break the old record, but is already sailing for second place.

Much of the rest of the field in various divisions is merely a little more than halfway home.
