Island Movers close out Gakuin University

The Hawaii Island Movers picked up their first win yesterday on a road trip to Osaka, Japan, with a 10-6 win over Gakuin University.

Herman Reddick and Mike Garcia each had three hits for the Island Movers and Kanekoa Texeira and Jeffrey Soulages combined to close out the game with a scoreless final 2 2/3 innings.

The day before, Osaka Gakuin rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to salvage at 6-6 tie with Hawaii. Reddick and Garcia each had three hits in that game as well, leading the Island Movers' 14-hit offense on a 102-degree day.

The Island Movers' road record is 1-1-2.

Nakashima, Baab win junior state golf titles

Kelly Nakashima and Allan Baab won the girls and boys age 15-18 Callaway Hawaii Junior State Championships yesterday at the Club at Hokulia on the Big Island.

Nakashima shot a 1-under 143 over two rounds and 36 holes to edge Mari Chun by two strokes.

Baab was 4 over to win for the second straight year, beating Jacob Low and Skip Murphy by two strokes.

Nakashima also qualified for the national Big "I" tournament in Ardmore, Okla., later this month, which will feature more than 10,000 of the country's best junior golfers. T.J. Kua was the boys qualifier.

The 14-under Callaway Hawaii State Junior Championships were held June 29-30 at the Hawaii Prince Golf Course.

Ryan Kuroiwa and Cyd Okino were champions in the boys and girls 10-under division. Pear Magallanes won the girls 11-12 division. Bradley Shigezawa and Haaheo Manini-Hew-Len won boys and girls 11-12, 6,100 yards division. Tadd Fujikawa was the boys 13-14 champion.

Rainbow baseball camps this weekend

The Hawaii Rainbow baseball pitcher or catcher camp for players ages 8-18 runs today through Sunday from 9 a.m.-noon and costs $115. The hitting camp runs the same dates from 1-4 p.m. and costs $115.

The fee for players registering for for both the pitcher or catcher camp and the hitting camp is $200.
