While we're talking sun sins, I confess I didn't listen to my parents either and went tanning between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. every other day, all summer long, through my teen years, broiling my all-too-white legs in baby oil.
I'm paying for it with splotchy reptilian skin, but a Japan company has come up with a spray-on coverup called Air Stocking, made of hydrolyzed silk, which helps give legs the smooth, even-colored appearance of wearing pantyhose. It also contains such skin-friendly ingredients as green tea extract, moisturizers and amino acids, and comes in natural, bronze or terracotta colors.
Consumers are instructed to hold the aerosol can about 7 inches from your leg, spray in a circular motion and wait for it to dry. Just as with facial foundation, it can be layered on thin or thick to preference. After using my hand to thin it, my legs did look smoother and more even-toned. Air Stocking's makers also claim the product can mask bruises and varicose veins.
For those who are self-conscious about hitting the beach with less than flawless skin, Air Stocking is waterproof, yet washes off with soap. There are 20 to 25 applications per can, at $28, available at Neiman Marcus.
