Gigs continue for
Warsaw Poland Bros.
THE PARTY continues through Sunday for self-described "Celtic/ Reggae/Punk crossover band" Warsaw Poland Bros.
This is the sixth year the trio has visited the islands to perform; brothers Aaron and Chris Poland and Jay Kalk have been in town since the beginning of the month, playing gigs at UH-Manoa, Kemoo Farms, Anna Bannana's and O'Toole's.
After playing a few more times this weekend, the guys head back to the mainland for the first date of yet another national tour. They'll kick things off a week from today in Los Angeles by sharing a stage with Fishbone and the Skeletones.
Although their music can be somewhat of an acquired taste, I can tell you that it's worth a try to go and see Warsaw perform live. Check them out tonight at Eastside Grill, tomorrow night at Kemoo Farms, Saturday at Anna's and on Sunday at the Wave Waikiki ...
NOT ONLY does Soljah Clothing owner Alika Winter want to throw the most raging parties this summer -- he's also trying to promote one of the strongest mixed martial arts fight cards I've ever seen on this rock.
"Soljah Fight Night" goes down tomorrow at the Blaisdell Arena and promises to be an entertaining evening, with two world championship matches scheduled to take place.
Local boy Ray "Braddah" Cooper will take on Jake Shields in the middleweight division, while Japan's Masanori Suda will face off against Dustin Denes in the light heavyweight division. Suda, as you may recall, was the fighter who knocked out Egan Inoue last year in just under 30 seconds.
Tickets range in price from $25 to $150 for "Soljah Fight Night," and also planned is a special edition of "Five Dolla Pitchers and Rubba Slippas" at the Hard Rock Cafe after things wrap up at the Blaisdell. The Hard Rock's parking lot will be fenced off and used as an outdoor party area, and Ooklah the Moc will perform live. Call 296-1043 for more info ...
SATURDAY BRINGS a couple of high class events this week -- first, local photographer and host of the "Piranha Room" monthly Russell Tanoue celebrates his birthday with a "Welcome to Hollywood" fund-raiser at the Ocean Club.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and a musical tribute to Hollywood is planned, featuring performances by Malia Gibson, Sonya Mendez, Traci Toguchi, Marlene Baldueza, Anita Hall and others. A portion of the proceeds from each $25 ticket sold will benefit the American Cancer Society and heart disease patient Brad Basuel. Call 581-0419.
Over at the Pacific Beach Hotel, ATM Productions will host a "Player's Ball" that also starts at 7 p.m. Highlights of the event include a three-course meal, live hip-hop showcase and dancing with DJs Kee and Bless. Everyone who shows up and pays the $50 admission will also be invited to a private afterparty that's scheduled at an undisclosed location ...
