Petersen hired at Idaho State

Former Hawaii assistant women's basketball coach Gavin Petersen has joined the staff at Idaho State.

Petersen accepted a job offer from Bengals head coach Jon Newlee, also a former UH assistant. Petersen arrived in Pocatello last Friday. Today he begins checking on recruits.

"We begin hitting the trails (today)," Petersen said. "July's the month you look at your recruits."

Petersen was an assistant for two years under UH coach Vince Goo, who retired this year. Goo's successor has not been named.

"I talked with Vince. He thinks this will be a great experience for me," Petersen said. "Hawaii's a unique place and hopefully I'll get back there to stay someday."

Goo party approaching: Goo will be honored at a fund-raiser July 31 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

"Thank Goo for the Memories" will recognize his contributions to the program with proceeds going to an endowed scholarship in his name. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and includes live entertainment, a silent auction and a program honoring Goo.

Table prices range from $1,000 to $5,000. Individual tickets can be purchased for $100. Separate donations will also be accepted. Fund-raiser forms are available on-line at www.hawaiiathletics.com or by calling Michelle Kaminaga at 956-4325.

Mari Cha IV on record pace

The Mari Cha IV is expected to finish the West Marine Pacific Cup today and break the record in the San Francisco-to-Kaneohe yacht race in the process.

As of yesterday, monohull racing yacht's estimated arrival time at the finish line off Kaneohe Marine Base was today at 4:30 p.m. That would break the previous record by more than a day. The Pyewacket set the mark of six days, 14 hours, 22 minutes, 20 seconds in 1998.
