Booze is big at
upcoming isle benefits


Pick your poison: beer, wine or sake.

July 17 -- two Saturdays from now -- marks a triple celebration of booze. Choose from among the second-annual American Brews, Blues & BBQs (a block party in Chinatown), the Joy of Food & Wine (a grand tasting and auction in Waikiki) or Sushi and Sake Night (poolside at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki).

All three are benefits, the first for Hawaii Women's Business Center, the second for the Rehabilitation Center of the Pacific and the third for the Asian-American Journalists Association.

American Brews, Blues & BBQs

4 to 10 p.m. on Nuuanu Avenue from Pauahi to King streets. Admission is free with scrip sold for drinks. Pay cash for food. Call 386-1436.

The Nu'uanu Merchants' Association celebrates American Beer Month, bringing 25 local and national craft breweries to a downtown block party. More than 40 classic beer styles will be represented -- ales, bocks, porters, stouts, pale ales, pilsners, barley brews and more. Highlights:

Beer & BBQ Cook Off: Featuring Hanks Café, Indigo Restaurant, Murphy's Bar & Grill and Tea at 1024.
Home Brew Master Demonstration: 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Arts at Marks Garage, 1159 Nu'uanu Ave. Free (donations accepted). Call 486-3057 or e-mail HOPS@hawaii.rr.com.
Homebrew Contest: Bring your homemade beer; for entry form and details call 486-3057 or e-mail HOPS@hawaii.rr.com. Cost: $5.
Also: Sampling of low-carb beer, wine and food products; a beer museum
Blues bands: Nitetrain, M.O.R., James Ronstadt & The Dynamic Shuffle Kings, and The Hawaii International Jazz Festival Blues All Stars.
Red, Write & Blue: Children invited to color a roll of paper to be sent to troops in Iraq, 4 to 7 p.m., First Hawaiian Bank lobby.

The Joy of Food & Wine

5:30 to 9 p.m., Tapa Ballroom, Hilton Hawaiian Village. Tickets: $100 at the door or $90 in advance (from Fujioka's Wine Merchants or REHAB Foundation). Call 566-3451.

The grand tasting features 200 wines from around the world, served with 30 artisanal cheeses and dishes by the Hilton's restaurants. The night includes a live wine auction, silent auction and sale of paintings by REHAB patients in the Louis Vuitton Creative Arts Program.

Entertainment: Ukulele master Bruce Shimabukuro & Friends
Wine seminars: Tasting of eight Joseph Phelps Insignia vintages, including the yet-to-be-released 2001; $165. Vertical tasting of Krug champagnes; $225. Attendance at each is limited to 30. Prices include admission to grand tasting.
Also: The REHAB fund-raiser is a two-part event that wraps up July 23 with a wine dinner at the Halekulani featuring guest chef Paul Wade of Montagna Restaurant at Little Nell in Aspen. (Very few reservations remain at $300 per person).

Sushi and Sake Night

7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort & Spa. Tickets are $50; $45 for AAJA members. Price includes admission to the weekly Feng Shui party at Ciao Mein at 9:30 p.m. Call 535-0460.

The event features 20 types of sakes and foods by Yata, Musashi, 3660 on the Rise and Wasabi Bistro.

Also: a tribute to sports columnist Bill Kwon and a silent auction of photographs.
