Warriors to open
against each other
Two neighbor island football teams are on the schedule for an intriguing matchup this fall.
They both go by the name of Kamehameha Warriors -- one from the Big Island and one from Maui.
The two campuses offered junior varsity competition a year ago and are upgrading to varsity status in football for the first time this fall.
The Kamehameha vs. Kamehameha interleague clash is planned for Aug. 20 at the Big Island campus.
"The matchup is quite interesting," Kamehameha-Maui coach Leo Delatori said. "It's historic, and it's even more interesting when you consider that it's the first varsity game that both schools will ever play.
"It also gives us a chance to get to know each other and create a bond between sister schools. That's something the two schools haven't really done much of yet."
Both schools have freshmen, sophomores and juniors and won't have seniors until the 2005 season.
Select team to Vegas: Radford forward Tereva Moore and Kalaheo guard Shanadee Canon are two members of a Hawaii girls basketball team heading to Las Vegas later this month.
The team will play in the American Roundball Corporation National Championship's high school all-star traveling team division.
"We're a young team and we may take some lumps," said coach Chico Furtado, who is the head man for both the boys and girls teams at Kalaheo. "But it will be a great learning experience."
The event is sanctioned by the NCAA, and college coaches and scouts will attend, according to Furtado.
Canon was a Star-Bulletin All-State third-team pick, while Moore was an honorable mention.
Three more Star-Bulletin honorable mentions -- guard Chelsie Sato of McKinley and forwards Kilioe Aliifua of Kaiser and Analee Viena-Lota of Kamehameha are also on the 12-member squad.
Only three of the 12 players are juniors and there are no seniors.
Swimmers achieve: Iolani's Mark Eckert made the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association's All-America list in six events.
Eckert qualified as an All-American in the 200-yard freestyle, 500 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle relay.
Punahou's Noa Sakamoto (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 200 individual medley, 200 medley relay), Maui's Chelsea Nagata (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Seabury Hall's Randall Tom (200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly) also earned All-America status in multiple events.
Surfriders hog wild: Of the four former Hawaii high school football players on the Outland Trophy watch list, two played for Kailua.
The Outland Trophy is given to the nation's best collegiate offensive lineman.
Hawaii's Samson Satele and Arizona's Keoki Fraser both played for former Surfriders coach Darren Johnson.
"Seeing that these guys are on the watch list is something that makes coaching all worth the while," Johnson said.
Kahuku alumnus Chris Kemoeatu of Utah and Kamehameha product Donovan Raiola of Wisconsin are the other two Hawaii players on the list.
League site coming: The Maui Interscholastic League plans to unveil a new Web site in the fall. MIL executive secretary Stephen Kim said schedules of all sports as well as the league's handbook will be posted on the site.
Of Hawaii's five leagues, the Oahu Interscholastic Association is the only one currently operating a league-wide Web site.
