YMCA program gets
$25,000 OHA award

The state Office of Hawaiian Affairs has awarded $25,000 to the YMCA Communities in Schools program to train human service providers and educators who serve predominantly Hawaiian populations.

The program will hold workshops to help service providers understand the values, communication styles, belief systems and cultural practices of their clients.

There will also be weekend training sessions for potential leaders of all generations based on Hawaiian concepts, practices and values.

The program will use the 'Ohana Management System and Ho'oulu I Na 'Ohana in the training program.

The system is a character development model for strengthening families, based on values practiced through the Hawaiian concept of ohana.
