Bahai Faith members to mark martyrdom

Members of the Bahai Faith will celebrate an anniversary date of their religion Friday with a program of music, readings and food that is open to the public. The celebration will begin at 11 a.m. at Honolulu Bahai Center, 2165 10th Ave.

The observance marks the martyrdom of a key figure in the founding of the religion in the mid-800s in Persia. The teacher who became known as the Bab, which means "the gate," was executed by the Muslim government for proclaiming the coming of a new religion and a new era. Three years later, Baha'ullah began teaching precepts of the Bahai faith.

Pope wants 'genuinely Catholic' institutions

VATICAN CITY » Pope John Paul II told visiting American bishops that U.S. church institutions -- universities, schools and hospitals -- must be "genuinely Catholic" and conform to official teaching on "respect for human life, marriage and family and the right ordering of public life."

John Paul said it was of "utmost importance" that Catholic institutions remain "Catholic in their self-understanding and Catholic in their identity."
