Outland watch list
includes 4 from isles

Samson Satele's first impulse upon receiving the news that he's among the college linemen being considered for the Outland Trophy was to get right to work getting ready to prove himself worthy of the honor.

"When (UH offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh) told me about it today, I felt like I should go running right now or do some push-ups or something," the Hawaii guard said last night.

Satele is one of four graduates of Hawaii high schools on the 57-player Outland Trophy watch list released this week by the Football Writers Association of America.

Arizona center Keoki Fraser (Kailua '00), Utah guard Chris Kemoeatu (Kahuku '01) and Wisconsin center Donovan Raiola (Kamehameha '01) are also on the list of candidates for the award given annually to the nation's top interior lineman.

"It caught me by surprise," said Satele, who graduated from Kailua in 2002. "Just playing football is always exciting for me and this just makes it a little more exciting."

Fraser and Kemoeatu are seniors, Raiola is a junior and Satele is one of just three sophomores on the list.

» Fraser (6-foot-3, 295 pounds) has been a fixture in the middle of the Arizona line since the 2001 season. He has started the last 23 games for the Wildcats and was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection last season.

» Kemoeatu (6-4, 338) is preparing for his third season as a starter on the Utes' offensive line. He was an honorable mention All-Mountain West Conference pick in 2003 despite missing three games early in the season while recovering from knee surgery.

» Raiola (6-3, 280) is the second member of his family to draw the attention of the Outland Trophy committee. His older brother, Dominic, was a finalist for the award while playing for Nebraska.

Donovan Raiola is also on the preseason watch list for the Rimington Trophy, which goes to the nation's top center.

» Satele (6-3, 289) started all 14 games last season as a redshirt freshman with the Warriors. He began the season at tackle before moving to guard for the last 13 games. He was a second-team All-Western Athletic Conference pick.

"It puts a lot more pressure on," Satele said. "I know everybody's going to be watching (UH quarterback) Timmy Chang and everybody's going to want to see the five guys up front, so I feel like I have to start working even harder."

The Outland Trophy winner will be announced Dec. 9 on the ESPN College Football Awards Show in Orlando, Fla. The trophy presentation will take place Jan. 13 at a banquet hosted by the Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb.
