3 Hawaii teams continue undefeated

AUSTIN, Texas » The Outrigger Canoe Club's 18 Club and 16 Club, and the Asics Rainbows 16 Club remained unbeaten after two days of pool play at the 25th USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Boys Championships at the Austin Convention Center.

Both Outrigger teams and Asics won three pool-play matches and were among the top seeds for today's third round of play.

In play involving other Hawaii teams:

» Outrigger 13 Club finished 2-1 to remain in title contention in the gold bracket.

» Ku'Ikahi 18 Open, Molten-Hawaii 18 Open and Onipa'a 18 Club went 1-2 yesterday to fall out of contention for the gold bracket championship. The 16 Club teams from Ku'Ikahi and Onipa'a were 0-3 to drop into bronze bracket play.

Competition concludes tomorrow for the nine Hawaii teams.

Seven other Hawaii teams will begin their four-day competition on Sunday: Asics Rainbows, Pilipa'a and Side Out (17 club); Ku'Ikahi, Onipa'a and Outrigger (14 club) and Asics Rainbows and Outrigger (12 club). A total of 345 teams from the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and Guam are in the event.

Metzger, Wong in main draw of FIVB event

Punahou product Stein Metzger and partner Dax Holdren advanced to the main draw of the ConocoPhillips Open in Stavanger, Norway.

The top-seeded pair defeated Sweden's Andreas Gilbertsson and Robert Svensson 21-14, 21-10 yesterday. Metzger and Holdren play Spain's Javier Bosma and Pablo Herrera today in the first round.

Also in the main draw is Punahou alumnus Kevin Wong and partner Eric Fonoimoana. The eighth-seeded pair take on Norway's Tarjei Skarlund and Kjell Arne Goranson today.

Ghost, Kaimiloa lead Pacific Cup Race

A swift downwind helped push Kaimiloa into the lead after the fourth day of the West Marine Pacific Cup Race. The J-44 from the Kaneohe Yacht Club leads the D division of the 2,070-mile race from San Francisco to Kaneohe. Ghost, another KYC vessel, continues to lead the A division. Ikaika is second in the B division.
