Aki defense hopes for leniency at age 21
Kahealani Indreginal was an innocent 11-year-old when she was brutally beaten, stabbed and left to die in a wooded state park where her body was found three days later, prosecutors say.
That, combined with the drug abuse, drug dealing and possession of illegal weapons by Christopher Aki "demand" that he be sentenced to the statutory maximum of 20 years, prosecutors argued in court documents.
Aki, 21, was convicted by a jury in May of the lesser charge of manslaughter -- recklessly causing the death of Indreginal, the half sister of Aki's longtime girlfriend, in December 2002.
Today, he is scheduled to be sentenced and faces either 20 years' imprisonment, 10 years' probation with up to a year in jail as a condition, or eight years' imprisonment if he is sentenced as a youthful offender.
The court pushed up Aki's sentencing at the defense's request, while he is still 21.
To qualify as a youthful offender, he must be under 22 at the time of sentencing.
