Connect with Kaiser

The Kaiser High School Cougar Band and Orchestra's "Film Project Team" will premiere their film, "Simply Connected," at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the school gymnasium, at 511 Lunalilo Home Road.

The one-hour feature about students' lives reflects the theme that we do not live in just our own worlds, but are connected to one another.

Every effort is being made to create a Hollywood-style red-carpet premiere. Audience members are asked to show up at 6 p.m., with red-carpet entrances beginning at 6:40 p.m.

A limited number of tickets will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis, at $5 for students and $6 general.

Hakaida on DVD

Hakaida, Kikaida's archenemy, makes his long-awaited debut in the eighth volume of the nine-volume "Kikaida" DVD series on July 13.

Along with the usual procession of DARK Destructoid monsters, Kikaida must deal with this formidable foe in black leather and a yellow scarf.

"Kikaida fans have all been waiting for the appearance of Hakaida," said Joanne Ninomiya, JN Productions owner and president. "To this day, even in Japan, Hakaida, the cool bad guy, reigns as one of the favorite of all Toei's tokusatsu (special effects genre) heroes."

The Kikaida series first aired in Japan from 1972-73, then debuted in Hawaii in February 1974 on the original KIKU-TV. The show became a hit with kids, transforming Kikaida into a pop icon. The series proved its enduring appeal with a revival that began when Ninomiya brought it back to Hawaii television in November 2001.

The disc will include Hakaida karaoke, cast and crew profiles and DARK Destructoid monster profiles with sound effects, with English and Japanese menus.

The DVD, at about $24.95, will be available through retail outlets and www.generationkikaida.com/store/, where pre-orders are being taken.

Size matters at Banana Republic

In case you haven't noticed, Banana Republic clothing is looking mighty fine these days, or at least not as generic as in the past.

The change was well underway before Domenico De Sole, most recently president and CEO of Gucci Group NV, joined parent company Gap's board of directors in May, but De Sole's presence can't hurt.

My beef with Banana the way it used to be was more about fit than style. The style was always classic and utilitarian, correct for every ocasion, but it was one of those companies using Amazons with simian arms and giraffe legs as fit models. Petite women could not relate, and there are a lot more of us than them in Hawaii.

But Banana Republic has finally seen the light and is making it easier for petite women to find stylish, well-tailored apparel with the arrival of its Petite Collection at the Ala Moana Center store. The line was previously available exclusively on BananaRepublic.com and at select BR boutiques.

The petite sizes are in the same styles that keep wardrobes current, but the proportions of suits, blouses, pants and outerwear have been downsized for real figures with arms, not tentacles, and legs, not stilts.

Items are available in sizes 0 to16; pants come in two inseams, at 26.5 and 28.5 inches. An in-store "petite fit guide" will help customers determine their sizing needs.

It's about time!

The silk watercolor-print strapless dress at left, $148, is sized for petites at Banana Republic, as are the other styles shown. In the center is a linen-blend one-button blazer, available in white or black for $198, paired with $88 pant and a paisley ring-tie halter, $44. At right is a silk watercolor-print halter top, available in pink and green, $78, and worn with stretch-cotton safari pant, $78.

Show your colors on the 4th of July

Speaking of Banana Republic and Gap, the family's youngest sib, Old Navy, is the headquarters for Fourth of July dressing, with plenty of opportunities to color your weekend in red, white and blue, whether you're heading to your back-yard for a cook-out, or out to the Windward side for BayFest.

The all-American trio of colors appears on everything from bikinis to bracelets, from tanks to T-shirts, often emblazoned with a flag, star or stripe motif. For the 10th year, Old Navy is offering its flag-accented T-shirt for a mere $5, making it easy for all to show their patriotism.

For those who don't want to be mistaken for overzealous flag wavers, tiny pendants make a quiet, but strong statement when worn with a simple white tank top.
