Hawaii Convention Center books barbershop singers

The Hawaii Convention Center has booked Sweet Adelines International, a women's barbershop singing group, for events in 2008 and 2013.

Sweet Adelines, which has an international membership of nearly 30,000, choose Hawaii as the site for its international competition and convention because it's a hub for international attendees and a draw for conventioneers, said Kathy Hayes, director of meetings and corporate services for the organization.

The events, which are expected to bring a total 16,000 visitors to the state, will generate an estimated $50.1 million in visitor spending and $4.2 million in projected tax revenue.

Gaze into real estate's crystal ball

A panel of experts will discuss their forecasts for the Hawaii real estate and development industry on July 15 at the annual Mid-Year Real Estate Review hosted by the Hawaii Developers' Council.

The event will take place at the Hawaii Prince Hotel, beginning with a breakfast at 7:30. The main program runs from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Panelists will include Paul Brewbaker, chief economist with the Bank of Hawaii; Harvey Shapiro, research economist for the Honolulu Board of Realtors; and Dean Uchida, executive director of the Land Use Research Foundation.

To attend, call the Hawaii Developer's Council at 845-4004 by July 9.
