Alicia Keys back
in concert

TICKETS GO on sale Thursday for the return of Alicia Keys to Honolulu.

Sources tell me she'll be here Aug. 7 at the Blaisdell Arena, with speed rapper Twista lined up as the opening act.

Keys made her first Hawaii appearance in 2001, with a concert at the former World Cafe after Jack Johnson wrapped up a show there.

I wasn't able to get details on ticket prices by deadline, but expect them to be higher than the $15 that was charged in 2001. Call 296-9494 for more info ...

SUMMER IS in full swing, so here's an update on some of the parties going on around town.

My weekend started last Wednesday with a trip to Dave and Buster's, where DFX Entertainment presents "Smooth" for the 21-and-over crowd. Normally the party goes off on D&B's roof, but things moved downstairs to the midway last week due to rain.

While I couldn't complain about the music being spun by DJs Jrama and Sonik, I wasn't feeling the 20-minute wait for drinks. My advice? Get there early to avoid the line and get liquored up ...

THURSDAY NIGHT was "Connect 4" at the Velvet Lounge, which has some of the most courteous and professional security staff in Honolulu.

They don't stand for any monkey business, but if you're cool with them, the guys working the door are really akamai.

I also got a chance to talk to Sean D that night, and he let me know about an MC battle that's planned for July 8.

DJs Kavet the Cataylst, Jahson the 45 Revolver and Wrong One will be lacing the beats, with the winning MC heading to Maui for another battle against the best the Valley Isle has to offer.

Want to participate? Get there by 10 p.m. on July 8 to sign up ...

OVER AT the Hard Rock Cafe, Fridays are raging thanks to Soljah Clothing, the Stone Groove Family and Veejay Entertainment's "Five Dolla Pitchers and Rubba Slippas" party.

There was a line to get in a lot earlier than normal last week because Makana was there to play, and Anti Social and DJ Krazy K kept things bumping all night. Hawaiian Ryan handled hosting duties, but yours truly managed to get on the mic for a bit as well.

Then it was off to Venus, where Richie Aqui celebrated six years at the club with a VIP party. DJ Anit was also on hand, celebrating her birthday ...

THIS WEEKEND also marked some changes in the local house scene -- the Nightlite crew wrapped up a string of monthly parties on Saturday at Meritage, while DJ Dawn kicked off a new weekly called "CaSa" on Sunday at the Velvet Lounge ... And you know what the oddest thing I saw all weekend was? Mayoral candidate Mufi Hannemann standing outside Sidestreet Inn just after midnight on Saturday, pressing the flesh and talking story as he waited for the valet guy to retrieve his ride ...
