Pair of water main breaks are repaired

Honolulu Board of Water Supply crews finished repair work last night on a 24-inch transmission line that ruptured Saturday afternoon in Nanakuli.

The break occurred just before noon Saturday in the right Honolulu-bound lane of Farrington Highway near Piliokahi Street. The main was back in service by 7:30 last night, said board spokeswoman Tracy Burgor.

She said the cause of the break is still being investigated.

Water Supply workers also repaired a 6-inch water main that ruptured yesterday in Kakaako.

The rupture occurred about 6:24 a.m. near 420 Keawe St., between Pohukaina and Auahi streets.

Crew members repaired the water main about 4 p.m.

A water systems operator said corrosion may have attributed to the rupture of the water main.

Maui hopes to prevent West Nile virus' spread

WAILUKU » The state and Maui County have developed an early detection system for the West Nile virus if it should appear in Hawaii.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa said detection of dead birds is an important part of preventing the spread of the virus, if it should arrive on the Valley Isle.

Arakawa and the state are asking the public to help by delivering suspected dead birds to designated sites.

State officials say those picking up birds should use rubber gloves or a plastic bag in the retrieval and not come into direct contact with the carcasses. The dead birds should be placed in a sealed plastic bag.

The West Nile virus can be transmitted by an infected mosquito or bird.

The symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue and body aches, and occasionally swollen lymph glands and a skin rash on the trunk of the body.

The symptoms of a severe infection, resulting in encephalitis or meningitis, include headache, high fever, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness and paralysis.

"About 1 percent of West Nile fever cases will progress to the more severe infections," said Dr. Lorrin Pang, state health administrator on Maui.
