Mossman at tribute
for Jack Lord
Former "Hawaii Five-0" actor Doug Mossman worked long and hard for the tribute to the late "Five-0" star Jack Lord and was going to emcee the program and the unveiling of a bust of Jack at Kahala Mall Saturday. But Doug was sidelined with diabetes complications the morning of the event. Singer Jimmy Borges, another "Five-0" actor, was asked to emcee minutes after he arrived, and did an outstanding job. The bronze bust, on the mauka Koko Head end of Macy's, was sculpted by Lynn Weiler Liverton, who was applauded for her work. Jimmy intro'd several guests who were part of "Five-0," including: Seth Sakai, Margaret Doversola, Charlotte Simmons, Dick Kinderlon, Dennis Chun, son of series regular Kam Fong Chun, and Helen Kuoha-Torco, who did the lively Tahitian dance during the show's opening credits. Jack's demands paid off handsomely as the show was always high in the ratings and was seen throughout the world during its impressive 12-year run from 1968 to 1980. "Five-0" put Hawaii's film industry on the map and developed a pool of local actors. The UH band played the "Five-0" theme at the tribute. Members of Ka Hale I o Kahala danced. "Five-0" received strong support from government officials and the police. Francis Keala was in the crowd outside the VIP tent during Saturday's ceremony. He was police chief when "Five-0" was on TV and said Jack would come to the office to talk. "He was a nice guy," Francis said.
