Nishimoto dethrones Kokx in match play

There will be no three-peat for former University of Hawaii golfer Bobbi Kokx.

Two-time defending champion Kokx was eliminated in the semifinals of the HSWGA Amateur Match-Play Championship by Stacie Nishimoto on the 19th hole yesterday at Oahu Country Club.

The 17-year-old Nishimoto, an incoming senior at Iolani, will take on Mari Chun, an incoming senior at Kamehameha, in today's 18-hole final. Chun, Monday's medalist, eliminated Ayumi Hori 5 and 3.

BYUH runner named Academic All-American

Brigham Young-Hawaii cross country runner Chelsea Smith has been named to the Academic All-America College Division Women's Track and Field/Cross Country third team by the College Sports Information Directors Association.

Smith carries a 3.86 grade-point average in exercise and sport science. The sophomore won the NCAA Division II national championship.

Biondi to be inducted to Hall of Fame

Matt Biondi, an Olympic gold medalist and swimming coach at Parker School on the Big Island, will be among 10 inductees to the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame on July 1 in Chicago.

Biondi won 11 medals, including seven golds, in his three Olympics appearances.

Other members of this year's class are Bonnie Blair, Alice Coachmen, Janet Evans, Dan Jansen, Jackie Joyner Kersee, Florence Griffith Joyner, the 1996 women's soccer team, Randy Snow and Bud Greenspan.

The induction ceremony will air on the USA Network on July 24.

Hershey Youth Track Meet on tap

The 21st Hershey Youth Track and Field State Finals, the qualifier for the regional meet, will be held tomorrow at Kaiser High.

Some 500 boys and girls, ages 9-14 and from all islands, are expected to compete in the event which begins at 7:45 a.m. The top finishers will be eligible for selections to the Pacific Southwest Regional Team.
