Ex-internees perform
"While my parents and I built the foundation of this Hawaiian paradise, what is the fate of our lives to end up in internment?"
This lyric is from one of the many songs that will be performed by former World War II Hawaii internees and other entertainers at "Internment Camp Songs and Stories," a free event taking place 10 to 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii's first-floor Teruya Courtyard.
Former Hawaii internees Harry Urata, Shozo Takahashi and Chojiro Kageura will share their wartime experiences and sing the music that played a significant role in their lives while they were detained during the war. Other entertainers will perform songs written by former Hawaii internees who have died. Audience singing is encouraged. English translations, as well as Romanized Japanese, will be available.
The event is part of a summer series related to the exhibit "Dark Clouds Over Paradise: The Hawai'i Internees Story" in the JCCH Community Gallery. The exhibition depicts how these detainees passed their time behind barbed wire.
Call the JCCH at 945-7633.
