Call center will prevent damage to buried utilities

Before firing up a backhoe or trenching machine, Hawaii contractors in about 18 months will be able to call a single number to find out if they're about to chop into a water or gas line, fiberoptic, TV cable or telephone line.

Gov. Linda Lingle has signed into law a bill that creates a call center in the Public Utilities Commission, where contractors can learn if their jobsite is near an underground utility.

Lingle said contractors have been anxious for such a service to avoid delays or added costs by accidentally damaging buried utilities and avoid the potential danger of hitting an electrical or gas line.

Under the new law, excavators mark their intended digging area and call the location into the One Call Center, which notifies any utility company known to have underground facilities so the company can advise the excavator of their exact location.

Failure to follow the new procedure could result in a civil fine of up to $5,000 a day, but not exceeding $100,000.

Clarks Bostonian opens in Waikele

A company that stepped into business in England in 1825 has opened a store at Waikele Premium Outlets on Oahu.

Clarks Bostonian Outlet store carries men's and women's footwear, hosiery, belts and shoe-care accessories. Clarks and Bostonian are units of C&J Clark in Great Britain.

As part of the store's grand opening promotions it will give away a $250 shopping spree to two customers. Each line of shoes is already carried at other Hawaii stores, according to the Web sites www.clarksna.com and www.bostonianshoe.com, but this is the first company-owned store in Hawaii.

The Bostonian Web site has a printable coupon for free shoe trees with a minimum purchase at a company-owned store.
