Zeus, a missing 14-week-old Jack Russell terrier, was returned home -- after the peewee's big adventure.

Michelle and Jason Hanley and Zeus were reunited yesterday after picking up the dog from the Wahiawa home of Annie Borden, who recognized from a newspaper article that the missing puppy was in her granddaughter's care.

Annie Borden discovered that Zeus, who had been missing for four days, actually belonged to the Hanleys and that the dog needs surgery for a heart murmur. Borden called the Hanleys.

"Michelle has been smiling all day," said Kathryn Rivers, the Hanleys' friend who initially found Zeus for the couple. "I have never seen a man so excited as when Zeus jumped into (Jason Hanley's) arms when he got home."

Jason Hanley said: "I didn't see him until 5:30. I played with him for a while, and he went nuts when he'd seen me."

The Hanleys found out on May 14 that Zeus had a heart murmur. The Riverses and Hanleys are saving money to pay for the operation, which might cost $4,000.

Zeus escaped from the Hanleys' house in Aliamanu Military Reservation on Sunday morning.

A military police officer found Zeus later that day and took him to the Hawaiian Humane Society on Waialae Avenue, said Rivers.

Before entering the building, the officer gave Zeus to two women who said they wanted the puppy, Rivers said.

Along came 8-year-old Eliciya Walters, who was going puppy shopping with her mom, Cecilia.

Eliciya petted Zeus, and soon after, the women offered her the puppy, Cecilia Walters said.

Eliciya named the puppy Lucky as soon as she got home, Cecilia Walters said.

Borden said that Zeus' original name was supposed to be Lucky.

"When we explained the situation and how the dog belonged to someone else, she (Eliciya) immediately wanted to give him back," Borden said. "He was hers for a few days, and she was happy."

Eliciya cried for a long time, but she is happy that Zeus is with his owners and hopes the Hanleys let them know his condition after surgery, Borden said.

"I knew it was the right thing to do," Eliciya said.
