Ferguson, Locey named top track athletes
Seabury Hall's Tia Ferguson and Kapaa's Joseph Locey have been named the Gatorade Hawaii High School Track and Field Athletes of the Year.
Ferguson captured three girls state titles this season, winning the 800-, 1,500- and 3,000-meter races at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association state championships on Maui last month. She also won the state cross country title in November.
She carries a 3.8 grade-point average and will attend Duke in the fall.
Locey broke the state meet record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.90 seconds during trials and went on to win the 200- and 400-meter races. He also set Kauai Interscholastic Federation records in the 100, 200 and 400 this season.
The state winners are also finalists for the Gatorade National Track and Field Athletes of the Year award to be announced later this month.
High seeds move on to match-play quarterfinals
The higher seeds advanced in four of yesterday's matches in the Hawaii State Women's Amateur Match Play Championship at Oahu Country Club.
The tournament's top three seeds -- Mari Chun, Bobbi Kokx and Stacie Nishimoto -- had first-round byes and automatically qualified for today's quarterfinal round.
Chun faces Jade Merkle, who won her match with Keiki Dawn Izumi by default. Desiree Ting defeated Biac Frame 9 and 8. She plays Ayumi Hori, who defeated Judith Jackola 9 and 8.
Haaheo Manini-Hewlen beat Kathy Ordway 7 and 5 to set up a match with Kokx, the two-time defending champion. Bobbi Arakawa, who defeated Hee-Sue Condry 8 and 6, faces Nishimoto.
Today's first match tees off at 8 a.m. The semifinal matches are tomorrow morning and the 36-hole championship match is scheduled for Friday starting at 7 a.m.
UH water polo nets academic honors
The University of Hawaii water polo team's work in the classroom has earned the Rainbow Wahine the American Water Polo Coaches Association's Team Honor.
The Rainbow Wahine compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.09 with four players earning "Superior" status -- Colleen Schiman (3.61), Tracy Andersen (3.58), Shannon Carroll (3.55) and Danielle Mulford (3.49). Two more players received "Excellent" ratings -- Malia Tarayao (3.29) and Makana Whitford (3.25).
The team also placed nine players on the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic All-Conference team with Brittany Dames (3.11), Audrey Harrer (3.06) and Amber Lumb (4.0) joining Schiman, Andersen, Carroll, Mulford, Tarayao and Whitford.
Masters swim meet this weekend
Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen, a world and U.S. record holder, will be among the swimmers competing in the Hawaii International Masters Swim Meet to be held this weekend at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Pipes-Neilsen has set 52 masters records in three age groups and will be joined by swimmers from Japan, New Zealand and Canada as well as local participants.
The meet starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and continues Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
Yachts leave Canada in race to Maui
The IBM Victoria to Maui International Yacht race began yesterday with 19 boats in three classes aiming for the Islands from Victoria, British Columbia.
The race was first run in 1968 and the record time is held by James McDowell aboard Grand Illusion in 2000, making the trek in nine days, two hours, eight minutes and 27 seconds.
