HONOLULU
Blasting cap seized at airport

A man was arrested at Honolulu Airport yesterday after allegedly trying to pass through a security checkpoint with a small explosive in his luggage.

State Transportation Department spokesman Scott Ishikawa said the man had a one-way ticket on ATA Flight 754, which took off for Los Angeles about 12:20 p.m. yesterday.

He was arrested at about 11:45 a.m., Ishikawa said, after allegedly trying to get through a security gate with a grenade blasting cap in his suitcase.

He was being held at a federal detention center yesterday, Ishikawa said.

Officials did not release additional information on the suspect last night, and an ATA representative did not return phone calls seeking comment.

No flights were canceled or gates closed because of the incident, Ishikawa said.

A Kalihi substation police officer seriously injured in a shootout at the Mayor Wright Homes complex in Palama Thursday afternoon has been released from the Queen's Medical Center.

Ermie Barroga Jr., 45, was shot in the shoulder when fugitive Gordon Morse allegedly opened fire on a group of officers who were attempting to arrest him at the housing area.

Barroga's father, Ermie Barroga Sr., said the officer was released from the hospital about noon yesterday.

"He's fine," Barroga said. "He went home."

Single-car crash kills 1, injures 2 on Big Island

A 26-year-old woman was killed yesterday morning and two others injured on the Big Island's Highway 190 when the sedan they were in ran off the road and into an embankment.

Police said the accident occurred at about 9:38 a.m. in Waikoloa near the 21-mile marker when the vehicle they were in went off the road and overturned into an embankment.

The 26-year-old woman was found dead at the scene.

Emergency crews transported the vehicle's 28-year-old driver and another passenger to the North Hawaii Community Hospital. Police did not have any information on the surviving passenger.

Both were treated and released yesterday. It's not clear whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
