Book sale in Kapolei

The Friends of the Library of Kapolei is hosting a fund-raising book sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, featuring more than 10,000 books for all ages in genres including fiction, sci-fi, business, computers, cooking, inspirational, travel, Hawaiiana and art. There will also be CDs, VHS tapes, DVDs, vinyl records and cassettes.

There will be a maximum cost of $1 each for paperbacks and $2 each for hardback books. Cash and checks only.

The event takes place at the Kapolei Public Library Building, 1020 Manawai St. Admission is free. For more information, call Malia at 672-8667.

Wood-turners' art

The Honolulu Woodturners Hui will host a show and raffle for Aloha United Way from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow at the Nohea Gallery at Ward Warehouse.

On display will be wares fashioned from local and exotic woods, free turning demonstrations, and opportunities for children to decorate wood tops.

Admission is free, with raffle tickets available for $5. Winners will receive bowls and turned vessels valued from $45 to $375, and will be announced at 2 p.m. July 4. Those who wish to enter the raffle without purchasing tickets may mail requests to Nohea Gallery at 1020 Auahi St., Building 4, Honolulu, HI 96814.

Grab a bite at Star

Star Markets-Kahala will host a New Food Products Fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow, offering visitors the opportunity to nibble on brown-and-serve sausages, vanilla Oreos, Patticake Bakery's snowball cookies and more.

Wash it down with local beverages such as Hawaiian Sun's Hawaiian Iced Tea, or try a sip of Coca-Cola's new low-carb soda, C2, from 1 to 5 p.m. The new cola boasts half the sugar, carbohydrates and calories of regular cola. Better Brands will offer a sampling of low-carb wines as well, from noon to 4 p.m., although drinkers must be at least 21.

In addition to the free edibles, there will be entertainment from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with Leonani performing Hawaiian and contemporary music, followed by deejays from STAR 101.9, who will be doing a remote broadcast from 1 to 5 p.m.

Other products to be featured include Ramar Foods' Magnolia Ice Cream, Frito-Lay's Rollitos chips and Yummyland pound cake and shrimp chips.

Essential beauty tips

Dana Clay Young, an international lecturer and expert in the field of essential oils and aromatherapy, and Peter Lamas, a beauty and skin-care consultant, will offer a free seminar in their respective areas of expertise from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Tower, Iolani 5 Meeting Room.

Young is one of the few people in the world familiar with every step of the production of essential oils, from soil preparation to seed selection, cultivation, harvest and distillation. As a result, Young has formulated and developed essential oils for several companies.

Lamas' beauty industry career spans 30 years, with a clientele list that has included Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Sharon Stone, Cindy Crawford and Kate Winslet.

His work has been seen in magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Glamour, and on the runways of Europe's major fashion houses.

He continues to work with celebrities and supermodels, but one of his goals, he says, is to bring beauty tips and techniques to women in every walk of life.

He has written several books, including "The Truth About Sun Exposure" and "Ultimate Anti-Aging Secrets."

Homebuyers fair

The first of three free Community Homebuyers Fairs will be held 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow at Kapalama School, 1601 N. School St.

Representatives of housing organizations will be on hand to counsel and provide information on how to qualify to buy a home.

To pre-qualify for a mortgage, bring records of your gross monthly income and expenses or download a form from www.hud.gov/local/hi/news/2004homefairs.cfm, fill it out and bring it with you.

Other fairs are scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon June 26 at the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 10 at the Windward Mall Center Stage. For more information call 522-8175, ext. 223.

A touch of glass

It's all about glass when Doran Chavez of Reflections Glass, featured speaker at this month's "Build New or Redo" free seminar, covers the decorative and structural aspects of using this material in residential design.

The workshop takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. June 28 at Sam Choy's Diamond Head Restaurant, 449 Kapahulu Ave., and will cover the how-tos of starting up and financing construction of a new home or remodeling project with experts from various organizations answering questions.

Miss Hawaii contest goes live on K5

Thirteen women will compete for the title of Miss Hawaii 2004 beginning at 7:30 p.m. today at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom, in a program that will be televised on K5 "The Home Team."

They will compete in swimsuit, evening wear and talent competitions to win the title leading up to the Miss America competition.

Hawaii has had two winners of the Miss America title -- Carolyn Sapp, Miss America 1992 and Angela Perez Baraquio, Miss America 2001. Miss Hawaii 2003, Kanoelani Gibson, was the first-runner-up to Miss America last year and won more than $55,000 in scholarships.

Richardson promoted

Mahealani Richardson has been promoted to the position of anchor for "KITV 4 News This Morning" it was announced by KITV 4 news director Tod Pritchard.

The interim anchor of "KITV 4 News This Morning" since April 2004 will team with Ben Gutierrez from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Before that assignment, Richardson anchored the weekend editions of "KITV 4 News."

"Through her efforts, and those of our entire morning news team, 'KITV 4 News This Morning' is focusing on breaking news from Hawaii and around the world," Pritchard said.

Richardson is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools and earned her bachelor's degree in communications from the University of Pennsylvania. She went on to assignments with CBS News "Up-to-the-Minute" and WCAU-TV in Philadelphia before returning to Hawaii news in 2002 after working for KGW-TV in Portland, Ore.
