Mercury puts
spin on jazz
TUCKED AWAY on Chaplain Lane near the downtown campus of Hawaii Pacific University, the Mercury continues to surprise nightcrawlers with a variety of different parties.
Getting its start tonight at the lounge is "Mercurial Jazz," a new monthly that promoters say will have DJs and MCs "freaking the legacy of jazz in contemporary table-turning and noise-making."
Doors open at 10 p.m. for the 21-and-over crowd, with DJs K.Y., Monkey and Niko on the decks, and live music by guitarist Rob Magary, bassist Justin Legaspi and drummer Bryant Legaspi.
And as an added bonus, there's no cover for the party's opening night ...
TICKETS ARE still available for tonight's Slightly Stoopid concert at Pipeline Cafe.
The San Diego-based ska/reggae/hip-hop/punk band, comprised of frontmen Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald, is probably best recognized for being signed by former Sublime lead singer Bradley Nowell when they were still in high school.
They've been on tour recently to promote their latest album, "Everything You Need," even spending the last few months on the road with Big Island boys Pepper before following them out to Hawaii for a show.
Doors open at 6 p.m. tonight at Pipeline, with the all-ages concert starting at 7 p.m. and wrapping up by midnight.
Stick around afterward and you'll also get to see the first installment of this summer's "Battle of the Rock Bands." Forsaken, Last in Line, Linus and Mixed Nutz will be there to duke it out for a spot at the finals on Aug. 19. Call 589-1999 ...

If you're 21 years of age or older with a valid passport, head over to the mall between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday. Network representatives will have you fill out paperwork and say a few words in front of the camera for a shot at one of approximately 48 semi-finalist slots and a chance to fly to Los Angeles for another interview.
Can't make it to the mall this weekend? You can also mail your own tape to the "Survivor" producers -- check out www.cbs.com for the address and to download an application form ...
AND IF you've got skills with a pool cue, check out Hawaiian Brian's "Aloha Open 9-Ball Tournament" tomorrow from 4:30 to 11 p.m.
