Little chef can win big prize

For little cooks, a big prize: A $25,000 scholarship -- for getting messy in the kitchen.

Food Network chef Rachael Ray is the celebrity name behind the Small Chef -- Big Mess Challenge, promoting the family bonding experience of cooking with children.

Children of all ages are invited to submit a tasty, messy original recipe, with photo to prove the point. Five finalists will be compete in a cook-off in New York City, the winner claiming the scholarship and a television appearance with Ray (she hosts "30 Minute Meals" and "$40 a Day."

The other finalists will each receive $5,000.

Co-sponsor is All laundry detergent, which explains the emphasis on making a mess, then cleaning it up.

The contest runs Sunday through Aug. 15. Entry forms will be available online at www.all-laundry.com, along recipes and tips for cooking with kids easier.

Entry forms are also available on All detergent boxes. Finalists will be announced in October.

Cooking camp

Continuing on the subject of kids and cooking, Kapiolani Community College is offering a weeklong Culinary Summer Camp for high school students (ages 14 to 18).

Chef-instructor Nina Jarrett will teach skills appropriate for cooking at home, or away at college.

Classes will cover fundamental cooking principles and techniques, as well as kitchen safety and sanitation as students make different soups, salads, simple entrées and desserts daily.

Classes will run 8 a.m. to noon July 12 to 16. Cost is $275. Call 734-9211.

Cooking without salt

The Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific is starting a monthly cooking class for people on low-salt diets.

The Low-Sodium Cooking with Flair series begins next Wednesday at the hospital's Frear Cafeteria, 226 N. Kuakini St.

Registered dietitian Moana Bachiller will teach ways of using herbs and other seasonings to replace salt in the flavoring of food. Dishes will be offered for tasting.

Classes will run 5:30 to 7 p.m. and cost $30. Class size is limited to 20. Call 566-3780 for reservations.

Wyss shares wisdom

Chef Martin Wyss hosts a cooking demonstration at this weekend's Saturday Farmers' Market at Kapiolani Community College.

Wyss, retired owner of the Swiss Inn, will cook with fresh island chicken, as well as offer tips on making salads and dressings.

Wyss and his wife, Jeanie, produce his signature Swiss Inn Salad Dressing, which he sells at the market.

The market is open weekly, 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.; the cooking demo is at 9 a.m. Call 848-2074.
