Warriors add outside hitter
Lauri Hakala, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter from Finland, will join the Hawaii men's volleyball team next season.
Hakala will have three years of eligibility.
Earlier in the week, the Warriors picked up UC Santa Barbara transfer Jake Schkud. The 6-5 outside hitter, a high school teammate of UH setter Brian Beckwith, redshirted for the Gauchos last season.
UH picks up academic achievement award
Hawaii, Rice and 30 other institutions were chosen by the American Football Coaches Association to receive a 2004 Academic Achievement Award from the Touchdown Club of Memphis.
Northwestern and Boston College achieved a 100 percent graduation rate, while three institutions, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State and Wake Forest, graduated their players at a rate of 90 percent or better. Hawaii and Rice graduated at least 70 percent of their football players. The study was based upon the freshman class from the 1998-99 academic year.
Frazier headlines QB Club
Hawaii athletic director Herman Frazier joins the Honolulu Quarterback Club as guest speaker for tomorrow's meeting. Also speaking will be former UH volleyball All-American Costas Theocharidis, First Pacific Corp. President and CEO Terry Lee, Punahou state champion baseball head coach Eric Kadooka and Konawaena state champion girls basketball coach Bobbie Awa.
Punahou baseball's Jared Pate and Konawaena girls basketball's Nancy Hoist will be presented their awards as sports people of the month.
The public is invited to attend the buffet lunch at 11:30 a.m., with the program starting at noon at the Pagoda Ballroom.
