as humor columnist

Charles Memminger, a Honolulu Star-Bulletin columnist, has been named the top humor columnist in the country for newspapers under 100,000 circulation. The honor was announced last night at the National Society of Newspaper Columnists' 2004 conference in New Orleans.

Memminger's column, Honolulu Lite, took first place.

Memminger has been writing Honolulu Lite since 1992. A graduate of Aiea High School and Oregon State University, he joined the Star-Bulletin in 1980 as a police reporter and held various writing and editing positions before becoming a full-time columnist. His column, in which he shares with readers his off-beat take on his life and life in the islands, has won numerous local and national awards.

He lives in Kaneohe with his wife, Margie; daughter Sarah; dog Boomer, and various ants, roaches, mongooses and geckos, all of which play recurring roles in his columns, not to mention his life in general.
