Warriors pick up UCSB transfer

Jake Schkud, a 6-foot-5 outside hitter, will transfer from UC Santa Barbara to join the Hawaii volleyball team.

Schkud, a high school teammate of Warrior setter Brian Beckwith, red-shirted with the Gauchos last season. He and Beckwith will be training with the U.S. Junior National Team this summer.

Schkud was the 2003 Mission League MVP at Loyola High. The Cubs won the CIF championship when Schkud and Beckwith were seniors in 2003.

Wife of former UH coach dies at 86

Ginger Rocha, the wife of former Hawaii basketball coach Red Rocha, died at the age of 86 on Tuesday after a massive stroke.

A memorial service and a private burial will be held today in Corvallis, Ore.

"She loved the islands and she had a lot of friends here," current UH coach Riley Wallace said. "Red wanted them to know she didn't suffer and she lived a good life."

In lieu of gifts, the family requests that contributions be made to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

Friends of Hawaii give out $900,000

The Friends of Hawaii Charities, Inc., and the Harry & Jeanette Foundation distributed $900,000 to non-profit organizations during a luncheon at the Waialae Country Club on Wednesday.

The funding for the grants was raised through several charitable events, including the Sony Open in Hawaii PGA golf tournament, the Turtle Bay Championship and the NFL Pro Bowl golf tournament.
