Damon Estate to sell cattle
The Estate of Samuel Mills Damon said it plans to sell the cattle on its Kahuku Ranch and close the Big Island ranching operation by July 31.
The Damon Estate sold most of the ranch's 116,000 acres of land to the National Park Service last July for $22 million.
A Damon Estate representative said the estate is in talks with a potential buyer for the livestock but offered no further comment. The ranch had 4,500 head of cattle when the estate first proposed selling the ranch in 1999.
Seven ranch employees will lose their jobs through the closing of the cattle operations, the estate said in a notice to the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.
The ranch lands will be added to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The sale was the largest conservation land transaction in the state's history and will enlarge the park by 50 percent.
