Family Zone to debut at UH football games

Hawaii home football games will have an alcohol-free "Family Zone" beginning this season, UH athletic director Herman Frazier announced yesterday.

The zone will feature activities, giveaways and contests for kids. Seats are located in the north end zone in the lower level (orange) V and VV sections. More zones will be created if the demand rises.

Season tickets go on sale Monday and are available by calling 944-2697 or on the UH Web site www.hawaiiathletics.com.

Lee wins world wrestling title

Moanalua High School graduate Stephany Lee won the 158.5-pound division at the University Women's World Championships in Lodz, Poland, Saturday.

Lee, a three-time Hawaii state champion, pinned Agnieszka Wieszczek of Poland in the title match. The incoming sophomore at Missouri Valley College had been invited to live at the Olympic Training Center but said she wants to finish her degree work first.

Roosevelt High School graduate Clarissa Chun finished fourth in the 105.5-pound division. She lost the bronze-medal match to Greece's Fani Psatha 7-5.

Speed and quickness camps at UH

Rich Miano's Speed and Quickness Camp opens its summer session June 12 at Cooke Field on the Hawaii campus.

Miano, the Warriors defensive backs coach, headlines the staff that includes UH strength and conditioning coach Mel deLaura. Demonstrations will be done by UH athletes.

The cost is $10, or $75 for all 10 sessions. Other dates are June 13, 19 and 20; July 17, 18, 24, 25 and 31; and Aug. 1.

The price includes a Subway sandwich and a Jamba Juice drink. For more information, call 739-5444.

Macdonald, Berger named All-Academic

Punahou products Eri Macdonald, a senior at Oregon, and Carolyn Berger, a senior at UH, were named to the Verizon West Region All-Academic second team for women's track and field yesterday.

Macdonald had a 3.72 GPA in journalism. She competed in both track (800 and 1,500 meters) and cross country for the Ducks.

Berger had a 3.93 GPA in political science. She also competed in both track (steeplechase, 400 hurdles and 800) and cross country for the Rainbow Wahine.

Honolulu United 3-peats in MISO masters

Kenan Knieriem scored four goals to lead Honolulu United to its third consecutive MISO Masters soccer title with a 6-1 victory over AP Kika on Monday.

Ming Kwon "Bobby Wong" scored the only goal as Ohana Masters edged Honolulu International 1-0 in the third-place match of the 45-and-over league.

Sailing canoe event to fete military

The Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association's season continues Saturday with the Kaluakoi Challenge, a 30-mile race from Kaluakoi, Molokai, to Lanikai Beach, Oahu.

In conjunction with the race, the HSCA is sponsoring "Messages of Aloha" following the arrival of all 12 sailing canoes on the beach. The public is invited to sign banners that will be sent to the National Guard unit from Hawaii currently deployed in Iraq, which is under the command of Capt. Joe Laurel, an HSCA member.

The race begins at 10 a.m. with the first of the sailing canoes expected to arrive off Lanikai around 2 p.m. For more information, the Web site is www.hsca.biz.
