A Maui celebration

Wine, food and a four-day weekend on Maui -- an enticing combination of factors that come together annually at the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival.

This year's event, July 8 to 11, is virtually sold out, but seats at the various wine seminars and cooking demonstrations may open up as the event approaches.

Still available are the large, open-air dining events, at $110 each for Hawaii residents ($140 regular price).

The Grand Tasting on July 9 features wines from 150 wineries paired with cuisine of Kapalua Bay Hotel chefs.

The Kapalua Seafood Festival closes the event July 11, featuring 16 Hawaii chefs serving up signature dishes, paired with wines selected by master sommelier Fred Dame.

Dame, president of the Court of Master Sommeliers Worldwide, leads a team of nine master sommeliers who will preside over various seminars and tasting sessions, all with the theme "A Salute to Italy & the World's Great Wine Regions."

Also participating in the seminars will be Italian winemakers Pio Boffa of Pio Cesare, Giorgio Rivetti of La Spinetta and Chiari Boschis of Pira Boschis, all known for their barolo and barbaresco wines.

Reservations are still available for Winemaker Dinners at restaurants throughout the Kapalua resort and for the Kapalua Wine Tours ($30), tastings of rare wines poured at locations around the resort.

The early bird ...

The Saturday Farmer's Market is celebrating summer with earlier hours -- the market will open at 7:30 a.m. beginning this weekend. It'll also close earlier, though, at 11:30 a.m. instead of noon, so no sleeping in.

The new hours will continue until October.

More than 30 vendors are regulars at the market in the Kapiolani Community College parking lot off Diamond Head Road.

Golden partnership

Aloha Shoyu Co. has signed Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi to launch its new product, Aloha Gold Soy Sauce.

Yamaguchi will appear in ads and make personal appearances promoting the Hawaii-made product, and partial proceeds from sales will go to Yamaguchi's charity, the Always Dream Foundation.

Aloha Gold is a slightly bolder version of Aloha's soy sauce, meant for use as a dipping sauce as well as for cooking.

Healthy cooking

Kapiolani Community College's Cooking for Health and Wellness Series offers cooking demonstrations and lessons in nutrition. All classes are taught by Alyssa Moreau, except on July 21, and cost $43 each. Registration runs three weeks in advance. Call 734-9211. The schedule:

Exotic Ethnic Cuisine: Explore exotic flavors for vegetarian cooking, 8 a.m. to noon June 26.
Quick and Healthy Meals: Low-fat meals can be made in a snap, 8 a.m. to noon July 17.
Cooking on the Run: Marathoner Sharon Kobayashi's class is geared toward athletes or others who have little time to cook, 6 to 9 p.m. July 21.
Cooking with Fresh Herbs and Spices: Adding flavor in healthy ways, 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 14.
