Hawaii wins Dinghy championship
Skippers Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock led Hawaii to its second North American Coed Dinghy Championship in three years yesterday at Cascade Locks, Ore.
Hawaii took the lead on the second day of the three-day competition and never relinquished it, scoring 181 points to finish 29 points ahead of Georgetown.
The Rainbows finished second in the B division.
Cornell hands volleyball job to Collins
Deitre Collins has been named head volleyball coach at Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y.
A two-time national collegiate player of the year while competing for the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine, Collins replaces Christie Roes.
Roes had an 84-54 record in five years with the Big Red and guided Cornell to a 21-4 record and a second-place finish in the Ivy League in 2003.
Collins was head coach at Nevada-Las Vegas for eight years and was Western Athletic Conference coach of the year in 1998. Prior to taking the UNLV job, Collins was an assistant at South Alabama, Northern Arizona and Houston.
She graduated from Hawaii in 1985 with a bachelor of arts in broadcast communications.
Overton takes job in Missouri
Bo Overton, thought to be a finalist for the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine head coaching position, was named head coach at Missouri-Kansas City yesterday.
Overton was an assistant coach at Oklahoma the past six seasons during which time the Sooners compiled a 143-54 record and won three Big 12 Conference regular-season titles.
Cooper in championship fight of shooto card
Ray "Braddah" Cooper will challenge Jake Fields for the shooto world middleweight championship on Soljah Fight Night July 9 at the Blaisdell Arena.
Also appearing on the card will be Masanori Suda, who knocked out Egan Inouye in 26 seconds, Shooto lightweight champion Alexandre Franca Nogueria and former UFC champion Jens Pulver.
Local talent includes Stephen "Bozo" Palling, Mark Moreno and Deshaun Johnson.
Warriors put 3 on MPSF all-academic team
Hawaii senior Josh Stanheiser and sophomores Matt Bender and Jose Delgado were named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's academic all-conference team yesterday.
Stanford put seven athletes on the 46-player list, which names all players with a 3.0 grade point average who has played in at least 50 percent of his team's matches.
