UH wins national title

The University of Hawaii captured its first coed national sailing title at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association North American Dinghy Championship yesterday in Cascade Locks, Ore.

UH's team of Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock finished first in the A-Division with 88 points and the Rainbows posted a team total of 181 points to hold off second-place Georgetown (210 points). Hobart/William Smith finished third at 222.

The B-Division team of Joey Pasquali, Matt Stine, Carly Allen, Cassandra Harris and Jeffrey Boyd came in second in its competition with 93 points.

UH, which finished second at last year's coed championships, entered the final day of competition with a 34-point lead over Georgetown and maintained its hold on first place to win the program's second national title overall. The Rainbows won the women's crown in 2001.

Scott, Rogers advance in Portugal

Former University of Hawaii volleyball player Sean Scott of Kailua teamed with Todd Rogers to win two matches at the Swatch-FIVB World Tour Portugal Open yesterday in Espinho, Portugal.

Scott and Rogers, the 10th-seeded team in the 32-team main draw, defeated 23rd-seeded David Klemperer and Niklas Rademacher 21-13, 21-13 and upset seventh-seeded Christoph Dieckmann and Andreas Scheuerpflug 21-15, 18-21, 15-11.

They face the second-seeded team of Markus Dieckmann and Jonas Reckermann today.

With a strong showing in the tournament, Scott and Rogers can increase their lead for the second berth on the U.S. men's beach volleyball team at the Olympic Games in Athens.

Scott and Rogers hold a 112-point lead over Dax Holdren and Stein Metzger for the second spot. Dain Blanton and Jeff Nygaard lead the Olympic qualifying list.

Lipsher selected to All-American soccer team

Punahou goalie Alison Lipsher has been selected to the McDonald's All-American High School Soccer team, making her the first female from Hawaii to earn a spot on the 36-player list.

Lipsher will play in the McDonald's All-American High School Girls' Soccer Game on June 13 at the Hope Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

Lipsher was a Star-Bulletin All-State selection after helping Punahou win its second straight state title. She will continue her career at Duke.

The McDonald's All-American High School Soccer Game annually features the nation's top seniors. The boys and girls teams are selected by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

MISO division title matches tomorrow

Lanikai Tuesday (9-4-1) will play the Honolulu Soccer Club Bulls (7-2-5) for the Men's Island Soccer Organization Division I championship tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.

The Division II final starts at 1 p.m. and is showdown between Aloha Amazon (12-2-0) and H2 United (8-3-3).

Sea Warriors hold softball clinics

The Hawaii Pacific University softball team will host a series of free clinics starting June 26 at the Sea Warriors' softball field on HPU's campus in Kaneohe.

The clinics run from 1 to 5 p.m. every Saturday from June 26 to Aug. 28 and are open to girls ages 14 and older. The clinic is limited to the first 25 girls to register.

Golf tourney to benefit baseball team: The HPU baseball team hosts its 10th annual golf tournament June 30 at Pearl Country Club.

The entry fee is $125 per golfer. Players can also enter closest to the pin, long drive and lucky number contests for $25.
