Gill re-elected head of Local 5
Eric Gill was re-elected to the top position of hotel workers union Local 5 yesterday, beating opponent Tony Rutledge by a 70 percent margin.
Gill's slate, which stood for Unity Progress and Union Power, won by the same margin for every seat but one. Kauai's executive board seat went to Bernard "Pinake" Balmores, who represented Rutledge's Real Experience and Accountable Leadership slate.
Gill supporters Hernando Ramos Tan and Godfrey T. Maeshiro were elected president and senior vice-president, respectively.
Halekulani rates well in survey
Waikiki's Halekulani hotel is in the top three for "World's Best Service," according to readers of Travel + Leisure magazine.
On a 100-point scale, Bali's Amandari posted a perfect score, something the magazine says no other hotel has accomplished in the eight years of the survey. Londolozi Private Game Reserve in South Africa was No. 2 with 98.5 points and Halekulani scored 97.55.
Among the hotels that listed costs, at least three that were ranked lower than Halekulani posted rates that were higher than the Waikiki hotel.
The magazine also rated the best hotels for service by region. Hawaii garnered its own category, with Halekulani at the top, followed by the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hawaii, Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort & Spa, Lodge at Koele, Fairmont Kea Lani and Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort.
