Police recruit allegedly
threatened wife with gun
A Honolulu police recruit is expected to appear for a preliminary hearing in Honolulu District Court on Monday on a charge of first-degree terroristic threatening for allegedly pointing a loaded firearm at his wife's forehead and threatening to shoot her.
Ernie Gomez, 26, made his first appearance in District Court yesterday. He turned himself in to the Kapolei Police Station on Sunday.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on May 30 at the Ewa home of Sherly Gomez, but she didn't report it until the next day.
Sherly Gomez told police that on May 30, she was talking to a male friend at the Bloch Arena parking lot in Makalapa at about 8:30 a.m. when her husband confronted them after seeing her kiss the friend on the cheek.
Ernie Gomez allegedly threatened her friend saying, "Do you know you are f---ing around with a policeman's wife?" The friend fled.
She said Gomez and the couple's daughter followed her home to Ewa, where he questioned her about the male and forced her to give him the man's number.
Gomez allegedly became enraged and retrieved a handgun, chambered a round and pointed it at his wife's forehead, Detective Earl Takahashi said in court documents.
Besides threatening her, Gomez allegedly physically assaulted his wife and prevented her from leaving home. She apparently sustained injuries to her face and legs.
Michelle Yu, Police Department spokeswoman, confirmed Ernie Gomez is a member of the recruit class that is expected to graduate this month. The gun Gomez allegedly used is not a police-issued firearm, Yu said.
Gomez is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.
