Screamin' good time

Thrill seekers are invited to kick off the summer at Bishop Museum's newest exhibit, "Scream Machines: The Science of Roller Coasters."

The 5,000-square-foot exhibition features 11 stations that allow visitors to experience all the heart-pounding, stomach-churning and head-spinning Gs of a roller coaster ride.

Hands-on activities such as the "Tumble-vision" and "G-Force" feature 18-foot loops, high and low G-forces and free-fall weightless sensations.

Admission to the exhibition is just one of the activities planned for Family Sunday this weekend.

The day starts at 9 a.m. on the museum's Great Lawn, with take-home crafts, face painting, costume stations, inflatables, flute-making demonstrations by Duchiecela Ecuador of Music of the Andes, storytelling by Vicky Dworkin and food booths.

Honolulu Theatre for Youth will perform "Pacific Tales" at 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. The roster of entertainers also includes B.E.T. Simple Soulz, Coconut Joe, and "American Idol" contestant Jonah Moananu, who will perform at 3 p.m.

Admission to Family Sunday is $3 for kamaaina and military, and free for Bishop Museum Association members and children under 3. Bank of Hawaii employees and customers with one guest will also be admitted free with an employee I.D. Regular admission is $14.95 for adults, $11.95 for ages 4 to 12, and free for children under 4.

The museum is at 1525 Bernice St. Call 847-3511 for more information.
