Shinseki joins board of First Hawaiian parent
Retired U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Eric K. Shinseki has been named to the board of directors of BancWest Corp.
Shinseki retired from the U.S. Army last August after a 38-year military career capped by four years as chief of staff, the top uniformed position in the Army. He was born on Kauai and was the first person of Asian ancestry to lead one of the American military services.
"Gen. Shinseki has a sterling reputation both here in the Islands and across the nation," said Walter A. Dods Jr., chairman and chief executive of BancWest.
Shinseki graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and has a master's degree from Duke University. During his Army career, he led troops in combat in Vietnam, where he was wounded twice and had to appeal to remain in the service. He went on to serve in command and staff positions worldwide, leading major commands in Europe and commanding the peacekeeping force in Bosnia.
Sound off on sustainable tourism

The products include a draft of a Socio-Cultural and Public Input Summary Report and a survey report on Hawaii resident attitudes regarding tourism sustainability.
Public comments on these documents, which should be submitted by June 15, can be made through the Web site.

Impasse ends in Hawaiian case
Boeing Capital Corp. and Corporate Recovery Group LLC, acknowledging that they are mostly satisfied now with the dissemination of information from Hawaiian Airlines, told the federal Bankruptcy Court yesterday that they are dropping their motion of impasse seeking court intervention.
The aircraft lessor and the Wilson, Wyo.-based turnaround firm were the first group to file a reorganization plan in the 15-month-old bankruptcy case.
Large farms dominate agricultural landscape
WASHINGTON >> Just 3 percent of the nation's farms -- those with sales of more than a half-million dollars a year -- are producing more than 60 percent of America's agricultural goods, according to the government's most in-depth look at who grows what.
While farming remains an occupation dominated by middle-aged and older men, women are making some inroads, the Agriculture Department said in its latest Census of Agriculture. The census is done every five years; the latest numbers cover 2002. The 70,600 farms and ranches with annual sales of more $500,000 produced about 62 percent of the nation's agricultural products in 2002.
