Irons defeated in Quiksilver Pro finals

Damien Hobgood scored a 19.90 in the finals of the Quiksilver Pro to defeat Kauai's Andy Irons and capture the $30,000 first-place prize.

Not all was lost for Irons, whose second-place finish increased his lead over C.J. Hobgood to 852 points in the WCT standings. Six-time world champion Kelly Slater, who finished the event in a disappointing 17th place, fell 996 points behind Irons in his quest for a seventh world title.

UH's Berger, Oregon's MacDonald all-academic

Hawaii middle distance runner Carolyn Berger was honored for her athletic and academic achievement yesterday as a member of the 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-America Women's Track and Field District VIII University Division second team.

The senior maintained a 3.93 grade point average while majoring in political science. It is the second straight year she was so honored by CoSIDA.

She finishes her career third all-time in UH history in the steeplechase and fifth in the 400 hurdles.

Punahou product Eri MacDonald joins Berger on the Academic All-America District VIII second team with a 3.72 grade point average and a major in journalism at Oregon.

UH sailing in second place after day 1 of ICSA

CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. » The Hawaii sailing team finished the first day of the International Collegiate Sailing Association's North American Dinghy National Championships in second place yesterday, 11 points off Dartmouth's lead.

Hawaii's A division finished first over six races, including two wins by Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock. Hawaii's B division finished the day in second place.

The action continues today and closes tomorrow.

Lajola to play for USA in Mexico, Costa Rica

Aiea's Dennis Lajola has been picked to represent the United States in International Tennis Federation events in Mexico and Costa Rica June 7-19.

Lajola, a 15-year-old attending the Bollettieri Tennis Academy on an IMG scholarship, was one of seven picked for the boys team by USA Tennis High Performance.

The team will be competing for the Tampico Junior Cup and the Copa Cariari.

Moanalua, NFL to put on junior football camp

Moanalua High School and the National Football League will conduct the First Annual Junior Player Development Camp June 14-19 at Moanalua High School.

The free camp for players 12-14 years old, includes an NFL practice jersey, football and bag, and is open to the first 180 players to register with completed waiver and medical forms, doctor's physical and proof of age.

Registration will be held June 14 beginning at 4 p.m. at Moanalua's football stadium. Packets can be picked up at the Moanalua football office, or go to www.mohs.k12.hi.us/ and click "football" then "summer camp info." For information, call Arnold Martinez at 368-7673.
